Firefighters battle tricky early morning house fire in remote part of SLO County
A “fully involved” structure fire burned an Atascadero home Sunday morning.
The fire was first reported to emergency responders at 5:58 a.m., according to Cal Fire public information officer Ryan Grebe. Smoke could be seen from fire cameras at around 7:15 a.m. on Toro Creek Road.
The home — a relatively small structure — was “fully involved” in the fire, according to Grebe, who was on the scene.
Grebe said it was difficult at first to fend off flames, since Cal Fire had to bring their own water tanks up the road.
“The challenge has been getting water up here,” Grebe said.
Firefighters could be heard coordinating logistics over the emergency scanner.
“Your next water will be up the road,” one respondent said. They could also be heard talking about additional water tenders and resources.
It can be more difficult to rely on hydrant systems in more rural parts of the county, versus relying on pressurized water systems in more urban areas, according to Grebe.
Five engines, one water tank, a battalion chief and a crew member offering breathing support were on the scene.
The fire has since been contained, according to Grebe.
The cause is still under investigation.
