SLO County man dies in early morning crash on Highway 58

An Atascadero man died after crashing his car into a tree early Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Daniel Lopez Ortiz, 33, was driving a 2006 Toyota Tacoma eastbound on Highway 58 “at a high rate of speed” at about 2:48 a.m., the CHP release said.

“Due to the driver’s unsafe speed, the vehicle straightened out a curve in the roadway” and crashed into a tree east of Red Hill Road, the release said.

Ortiz died of his injuries.

He did not have passengers in his vehicle.

The CHP said alcohol was “believed to have been a factor.”

The crash remained under investigation.
