SLO County poised to name a new lead attorney. Here’s who the board will consider
San Luis Obispo County will soon have a new lead attorney — and a familiar face is being considered for the position.
At next Tuesday’s meting, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors will consider appointing assistant county counsel Jon Ansolabehere to lead the County Counsel’s Office.
If appointed, Ansolabehere will start the new job on March 16, replacing current county counsel Rita Neal when she retires next month.
He would make $137.98 per hour, the contract said.
Hired as chief deputy county counsel in 2019, Ansolabehere was promoted to assistant county counsel in 2022, a county news release said.
“Jon is an extremely bright and energetic attorney whom I would be thrilled to see take the reins of the County Counsel’s Office,” Neal said in the news release. “I know the county, the staff we work with and our community would be in good hands under his leadership.”
Ansolabehere graduated from Cal Poly first with a political science degree and later a master’s degree in public policy, the county said. He earned his law degree from Golden Gate University.
The attorney started his law career working for a private practice that represented a variety of clients including public agencies, ranchers, community groups, property owners and small business owners. From 2013 to 2018, he served as the assistant city attorney for San Luis Obispo.
Ansolabehere lives on a ranch in Creston with his wife and two children. When not practicing law, he enjoys coaching youth sports and serving in local organizations.
