An earthquake in Kings County rattled the Central Valley on Thursday afternoon and was felt across San Luis Obispo County.

The 4.3-magnitude earthquake centered near Coalinga occurred at about 5 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was located between Coalinga and Avenal, a couple miles west of Interstate 5.

People living as far south as Arroyo Grande felt the earthquake, and at least 15 reported noticing the shaking by posting using the USGS’ “Did You Feel It?” tool, mostly from Paso Robles and Atascadero.

The 4.3 magnitude meant the quake was widely felt but would only cause minor damage to property.
