Cal Poly freshman dies in accidental drowning while on vacation. He ‘was larger than life’

A first-year Cal Poly student died in an accidental drowning while on vacation over winter break, the university announced on Tuesday.

Nico Thomas Goon of Reno was a freshman studying civil engineering at Cal Poly. In 2024, he graduated from of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School in Reno.

“Nico was larger than life and loved his roommates,” Goon’s family said in the news release.

He died on Dec. 29, according to the university.

“Nico’s family shared that he was the happiest he’d ever been here at Cal Poly,” the university said.

His family will hold a memorial service in Reno on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace Church, 1220 Robb Drive.

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School posted an invitation on Facebook to Goon’s celebration of life.

“His smile could light up a room,” one person commented on the Facebook post. “Love and prayers to the Goon Family.”

The university encouraged students and faculty to seek support.

“We know that processing this loss can be difficult for members of our community,” the news release said. “Please know that we care about your well-being and strongly encourage you to utilize the following resources below if you need additional support.”

People can call the crisis line at any time of day at 805-756-2511 for immediate support.

Students can schedule same-day appointments with the university’s counseling services in Building 27 by calling 805-756-2511. They can also schedule a counselor to speak with a group by calling the same phone number or emailing counseling@calpoly.edu and requesting to speak with counseling services director Andrea Lawson.

Additionally, students can reach out to the dean of students for support at 805-756-0327 or deanofstudents@calpoly.edu.

Cal Poly employees and their families can access confidential counseling services through the Employee Assistance Program. Call their 24-hour hotline to speak with a counselor at 800-367-7474.

“A common reaction to tragedy is to want information,” the news release said. “Be thoughtful and respectful when sharing information with others and on social networking sites.”
