As San Luis Obispo County celebrates the holiday season, some businesses and services are preparing to close on select dates.

What does that mean for garbage collection? Will New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day delay trash pickup in SLO County?

Here’s what to keep in mind:

Which holidays will delay trash pickup in SLO County?

The city of San Luis Obispo partners with San Luis Garbage, a subsidiary of Waste Connections, to handle all residential and commercial waste, according to the city website.

That includes recycling and organic waste collection services.

Waste Connections also operates South County Sanitary and Mission Country Disposal, which handle garbage pickup in other parts of the county, as well as Morro Bay Garbage, which the city of Morro Bay partners with for trash collection.

Waste Connections only formally observes one holiday each year: Christmas Day on Dec. 25.

Will New Year’s Eve affect trash pickup? New Year’s Day?

Waste Connections customers across San Luis Obispo County can expect normal trash pickup on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day: Tuesday, Dec. 31, and Wednesday, Jan. 1.

When is waste collection in Paso Robles during the holidays?

According to the city of Paso Robles, Paso Robles Waste Disposal is the only franchise collection company in town.

In addition to Christmas Day, Dec. 25, no trash collection takes place in the city on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, according to Paso Robles Waste Disposal:

In 2025, New Year’s Day falls on a Wednesday.

Waste service will be delayed by one day after the holiday, according to the city website.

“If a holiday falls on a Wednesday, that service and all service days afterward (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) will be delayed by one day,” the city said.

Customers who normally have trash picked up on Friday will have their waste collected on Saturday instead, according to the city website.
