A multiple-vehicle crash on Highway 101 southbound has traffic backed up for nearly 12 miles just before the Cuesta Grade.

According to the Caltrans QuickMap app, the crash occurred around 8:25 a.m. on Highway 101 southbound near Highway 58 toward Santa Margarita.

According to the California Highway Patrol traffic incident page, the crash was between at least three vehicles — a red Ford sedan blocking lane one and two gray sedans on the right-hand shoulder.

The red Ford appeared to have rear ended one of the gray cars, a silver Hyundai, the CHP page said.

The Caltrans’ Quickmap showed traffic backing up on Highway 101 southbound from the Highway 58 ramp to about one quarter of the way south of Santa Barbara Road.

Apple Maps traffic showed it could take 30 minutes to get through the 12 miles of traffic.

To avoid traffic, the mapping application suggested taking the Santa Barbara Road exit and turning right on El Camino Real before merging back onto Highway 101 southbound.

That detour was estimated to take 18 minutes.
