Central Coast toddler dies after being hit by vehicle

A 1-year-old child was struck and killed by a vehicle on Sunday afternoon in Santa Maria.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Santa Maria police officers responded to the 600 block of West Cypress St. after a caller reported a vehicle had hit a 1-year-old, Lt. Paul Van Meel said Monday.

The child was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center and, despite lifesaving efforts, was pronounced dead due to the injuries.

The child’s name will be released after notification of family members, police said.

Members of the Santa Maria Police Department’s Traffic Bureau were investigating.

The SMPD Traffic Bureau has requested that anyone with information about the incident call 805-928-3781, ext. 2315, for Officer Robles, or ext. 1355 for Officer Rhoads.
