One man died and another was injured Saturday morning in a rollover crash in San Luis Obispo.

At 11:08 a.m., the San Luis Obispo Communications Center received a call of a white Ford Focus that had rolled over on O’Connor Way, north of Foothill Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The 2016 Ford was driven by Mr. Carlos CordonRios, 21, of Murrieta, who was traveling southbound on O’Connor Way. In the passenger seat was Robert Hess, 20, of Temecula. It was unclear what speed CordonRios was going.

As CordonRios drove the Ford around a curve in the roadway, the car drifted to the right onto the dirt shoulder, the release said. When he applied the brakes and tried to turn left back onto the roadway, CardonRios lost control of the car and it traveled down a hill. The car became airborne, overturned and crashed into the bottom of an embankment in a field.

Hess died as a result of the crash, while CordonRios suffered minor injuries.

“The cause of the crash is still under investigation,” the release said, adding that neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected to have been a factor.

Tom Swanson, duty chief for Cal Fire SLO, said two battalion chiefs and three engines responded to the scene. Swanson said first responders removed the people from the vehicle.

Contact Officer Adrianse at the San Luis Obispo CHP office at 805-594-8700 with any information regarding the crash.
