One person died in a fire that burned a house in Morro Bay early Saturday morning.

At about 12:20 a.m., the Morro Bay Police and Fire Departments responded to a residential structure fire in the 500 block of Kings Avenue, the department said in a news release.

The officers who arrived first on scene were unable to access the home due to excessive smoke and flames, the Police Department said in a post on Facebook.

Firefighters arrived minutes later and began working to contain the fire.

One fatality was confirmed, but the victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the Fire Department said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
