Two people are dead after they attempted to pass a big rig on Highway 46 near Highway 41 and crashed head-on with another vehicle early Tuesday morning.

A driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was driving a 2020 Hyundai westbound on Highway 46 East about four miles east of the Cholame “Y” just after midnight Tuesday morning, California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The driver, who also had a passenger in the vehicle, was traveling around 55 mph behind a tractor-trailer, which they then decided to pass.

When the driver entered the eastbound lane in an attempt to pass the big rig, they crashed head-on with Grant McKenzie, who was driving a 2005 Ford F350.

McKenzie, who lives in San Diego, was transported to Adventist Health Sierra Vista hospital in San Luis Obispo with major injuries, the CHP said.

The driver and passenger in the Hyundai both died in the crash, the CHP said. Their identities are being withheld pending notification to next of kin.

The agency said it does not suspect impairment was a factor in the crash.
