The Grover Beach Police Department will soon be under new leadership following the retirement announcement of Chief John Peters, the city said in a news release.

Peters’ replacement will be a familiar face to Grover Beach residents, with city manager Matt Bronson selecting Cmdr. Jim Munro as the department’s new Chief, the release said.

Peters joined the Grover Beach Police Department in 2006, rising to the position of chief in 2015.

While leading the department, Peters helped implement the Presidential Task Force’s 21st Century Policing model and secured more than $3 million in grants, according to the release.

“I am happy I had the opportunity to work in the very supportive community of Grover Beach,” Peters said in the release. “I can confidently say that the Police Department has the best team of professionals in its history, and Jim Munro will make an excellent chief of police.”

Peters was also involved in implementing the city’s Cannabis Regulatory Program, body cam program, community surveys and the Coffee with a Cop community engagement initiative, according to the release.

Munro’s employment agreement will be formally approved by the Grover Beach City Council, according to the release.

“I am deeply humbled to have been selected to lead the dedicated men and women of the Grover Beach Police Department, and I pledge to serve our community with integrity, dedication, and a commitment to excellence,” Munro said in the release. “I’m thankful for the guidance and leadership of Chief Peters, and I congratulate him on a very successful career.”
