Arroyo Grande High School students and faculty were told to shelter in place while police investigated an apparent prank threat on Wednesday morning, according to an apparent alert sent to parents.

The shelter-in-place order was put in place after the Arroyo Grande Police Department informed the school that an anonymous threat had been made, according to a message to parents that was shared on Facebook.

Students and staff sheltered in classrooms while police and K-9 units swept the campus.

Ultimately, no threats were found over the course of the police sweep, Lucia Mar Unified School District communications manager Amy Jacobs said. The case was likely and incident of “swatting” — a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to call in a large dispatch of armed police officers to a specific address.

Jacobs said the threat was identical to previous versions received in recent months, one at an Arroyo Grande store and one in Paso Robles.

Neither of those threats were credible, Jacobs said in an email.

Jacobs said additional counselors will be available to any student or staff members who would like support after the shelter-in-place order was lifted around 11 a.m.
