What do you think about parking in downtown SLO? The city wants to hear from you
Parking has been a hot-button topic in San Luis Obispo in recent months — and the city wants to hear your thoughts.
San Luis Obispo will hold a pair of workshops in February to garner community input on parking in the city, especially in its downtown core.
The first will take place in person on Feb. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the San Luis Obispo Library, located at 995 Palm St., while the second virtual meeting will take place Feb. 14 from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Zoom.
In July, the city made several changes to its downtown parking programs, including nearly doubling prices and adding new technology at the parking structures. Those changes angered some who said the city was harming downtown businesses by making it more difficult to park in the city’s core.
After a tense meeting in November, the City Council voted to bring back the first hour of free parking in downtown structures, as well as launch a parking rates study that would explore short- and long-term options for parking.
According to the city, a number of community members have since offered “ideas that could make downtown parking more user-friendly and affordable.”
The workshops will offer the chance to explore those solutions, as well as gather any additional ones not yet considered. The recommendations could the be included in the rate study results.
The study is expected to go to the City Council in April.
