1 person suffers burns as fire erupts at SLO County apartment
One person was injured in an Arroyo Grande apartment fire on Thursday afternoon, according to the Five Cities Fire Authority.
The fire was reported in the 400 block of South Elm Street at 1:35 p.m., according to emergency response app, PulsePoint.
One person was in the apartment unit when the fire started. She suffered burns from the fire but was able to escape the building before firefighters arrived, according to Five Cities Fire Authority Chief Steve Lieberman.
The patient was quickly transported to the hospital, he said.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they saw “smoke and fire blowing out of the front window” of the apartment unit, Lieberman said.
They contained the fire and prevented the blaze from spreading to other units, he said.
Lieberman assumed there would be significant smoke and fire damage to the unit. The fire was still under investigation as of Thursday afternoon, he said.
When apartment resident Jubriel Arnesby heard people screaming, he walked outside of the gym to see one of the units had caught fire.
“By the grace of God, the lady came out safe and there was no child in there,” Arnesby told The Tribune from the scene Thursday.
As of 2:40 p.m., units were still at the scene of the fire.
