An Atascadero teen was rescued via helicopter Thursday after he fell about 250 feet off a cliff and was stranded overnight in the Ventana Wilderness near Big Sur, the California Highway Patrol said in a Facebook post. He sustained minor injuries.

The 19-year-old hiker fell while hiking on the Pine Ridge Trail near Sykes Campground around 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 4, CHP said.

His hiking partner was able to contact 911, and local Search and Rescue and the Big Sur Fire Department began the rescue response.

The Search and Rescue team hiked about six miles and found the hiker around nighttime, the CHP said.

The hiker was found with minor, non-life-threatening injuries but was unable to free himself from where he fell.

A CHP helicopter rescued the hiker the following morning shortly after dawn, the agency said.

The hiker was flown to a ground rescuers with California State Parks and American Medical Response before being flown by air ambulance to Natividad Hospital in Salinas.
