Pedestrian hit and killed by train on Central Coast tracks
A pedestrian was stuck by a train and killed on Monday near Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies and other emergency personnel were dispatched at about 9 a.m. to the railroad tracks in the area of the 4500 block of Hollister Avenue, near the former Juvenile Hall, said Raquel Zick, sheriff’s public information officer.
It was unknown whether an Amtrak passenger train or a freight train was involved in the incident.
Personnel from the sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau responded to the scene and were conducting an investigation, Zick said.
The identity of the victim had not been confirmed as of midday, Zick said.
The tracks were shut down to train traffic for several hours during the emergency response and investigation Monday morning.
