Vegetation fire briefly prompts evacuations, Highway 101 ramp closure in SLO

A fire broke out in the area of Broad and Hill streets in San Luis Obispo on Friday night, briefly forcing evacuations of surrounding homes and a Highway 101 ramp closure.

Units responded to a reported vegetation fire in the area off Highway 101 at around 8:20 p.m., according to emergency response app PulsePoint.

According to emergency scanner traffic, the San Luis Obispo Police Department was at one point conducting evacuations of nearby homes that were threatened by the fire, but by 8:50 p.m., residents were being allowed back into their homes.

Emergency responders had also closed the southbound Highway 101 ramps at Broad Street as crews attempted to battle the blaze, according to CHP’s traffic incident report page.

Forward progress on the fire was stopped by 8:40 p.m., according to a tweet from the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department.

Several units were still at the scene, and people were urged to use caution in the area.

The cause was under investigation.
