Live updates: Firefighters contain vegetation fire near Highway 1 in Morro Bay
Firefighters responded to a vegetation fire burning Wednesday afternoon along Highway 1 near South Bay Boulevard in Morro Bay.
Cal Fire gives update on progress
Update, 1:20 p.m.:
Firefighters halted the fire’s forward progress at around 1:17 p.m. with about 10 acres burned, according to Pulsepoint. Crews were expected to be onsite cleaning up the remaining smoke and flames for another one to two hours.
Update, 1:15 p.m.:
According to Cal Fire division chief Mike Salas, there was no estimate available for how long Highway 1 would be closed on both sides from San Bernardo Creek through Morro Bay Boulevard.
Highway 1 closed as firefighters battle blaze
Update, 1 p.m.:
Salas said the fire was spreading in grass at a moderate pace.
Salas said he expected fire crews to be at the scene for the next hour to do mop up, and two water drops from a helicopter had slowed the rate of spread.
Highway 1 was closed completely on both sides from San Bernardo Creek through Morro Bay Boulevard, Salas said.
Drivers were being directed to South Bay Boulevard by way of Quintana Road into Morro Bay, a Cal Fire firefighter said.
Air support joins firefighting effort in Morro Bay
Update, 12:50 p.m.:
An air attack unit was on scene as of around 12:40 p.m.
The Morro Bay Police Department also cautioned drivers to avoid Highway 1 south of the South Bay Boulevard exit, according to a post on the department’s Facebook.
Fire was observed spreading near the San Bernardo Creek exit around 12:44 p.m.

Firefighters responded to a vegetation fire along Highway 1 in Morro Bay on Wednesday afternoon, according to emergency radio traffic.
The fire, located at 1401 Teresa Road near Highway 1, was reported at 11:57 a.m., according to the Pulsepoint app. The location is near the end of South Bay Boulevard and the Morro Bay water reclamation facility.
As of 12:13 p.m., around 10 acres had been burned by the fire, which was progressing at a rapid rate, according to Pulsepoint.
Firefighters at the site of the fire said they made access to the flames close to nearby power lines.
The incident commander also requested the California Highway Patrol’s help in diverting traffic, according to Pulsepoint.
