San Luis Obispo County’s first Homeless Services Division manager has resigned after two years on the job.

Joe Dzvonik submitted his resignation from the SLO County Department of Social Services on Sept. 7, according to a Thursday news release.

Thursday is Dzvonik’s last day serving the county, the release said.

In the release, SLO County social services director Devin Drake said the county is “strategically positioned” to bring more services and housing to the local unhoused population thanks to Dzvonik.

“The county and our department appreciate Mr. Dzvonik’s two years of service and the contributions he made to overhaul the county’s approach to homelessness,” Drake said. “We will always be grateful for his leadership in developing the countywide plan to address homelessness and the formation of the Homeless Services Division.”

The Homeless Services Division was established by the Department of Social Services on Aug. 9, 2022, with Dzvonik as its first manager.

That month, the county launched its five-year plan to reduce homelessness by 50%, aiming to house 2,050 homeless people living in the county over that time period.

The county has already begun a “thoughtful search” for the Dzvonik’s position at the Homeless Services Division, according to the statement.

Dzvonik told The Tribune he left the job for personal reasons, unrelated to any part of his work with the county.

Dzvonik said he’s not sure what his next step will be, though he has some “irons in the fire.”

“I just enjoyed every day that I worked to serve the people of San Luis Obispo County and the professionals who work and the county government,” Dzvonik said.
