The San Luis Obispo County Department of Public Works will begin work this week to repair damage to the Arroyo Grande Creek flood control channel and levee in Oceano, the department said in a news release.

Construction crews will be active in Oceano’s Flood Control Zone 1/1A along the Arroyo Grande Creek channel and levees, the release said.

Phase 1 of the project will address the flow characteristics of the creek channel by removing vegetation and sediment, which will improve the creek’s capacity and future flood protection, the release said.

The second phase will consist of levee repairs, fixing damage caused by overtopping and seepage during the winter storms that soaked the county in early 2023.

Crews are expected to be active in South County near the levees and Arroyo Grande Creek channel for “the next several months,” the release said.

“The district would like to thank the community of Oceano and members of the Flood Control Zone 1/1A Advisory Committee for their continued patience, cooperation and support,” the department said in the release.
