Travelers headed to the Central Valley should prepare for a longer trip today thanks to a full closure of Highway 41.

The highway is closed for paving from one-and-a-half miles past the Cholame “Y” to the Kern County line, Caltrans said in a news release.

The paving project will close the roadway from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Caltrans said.

Drivers going north on Highway 41 will be rerouted east on Highway 46 and then north on Highway 33 to just south of Kettleman City, the release said.

Southbound drivers on Highway 41 will be detoured from Highway 33 to Highway 46.

Drivers will also face intermittent, one-way traffic control two nights next week, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, the release said.

Motorists should also expect temporary, one-way traffic control during the day until the project is complete, Caltrans said.

Papich Construction Company in Arroyo Grande is managing the $2.2 million project, which should be finished by mid-September, according to Caltrans.

The paving of Highway 41 is part of a series of improvements being made to the Cholame “Y” area that connects Highways 41 and 46. Roadwork-related closures on Highway 41 started on Aug. 21.
