Pickup truck crashes into Highway 1 guardrail, suspected drunk driver arrested

A pickup truck crashed into a Highway 1 guardrail in Morro Bay and overturned on Friday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said, causing the agency to close a nearby off-ramp.

At about 2:20 p.m., the driver lost control of his silver Chevrolet truck and crashed into the guardrail just south of the Morro Bay Boulevard offramp near Quintana Road, a CHP officer told The Tribune.

The truck flipped onto its roof and lost its left wheel, according to the CHP traffic incident log.

The vehicle’s driver then fled the scene, according to the traffic log.

CHP officers later found the driver, later identified only as a San Luis Obispo County resident in his 30s, on Main Street and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, the agency said.

The CHP closed the Morro Bay Boulevard off-ramp due to the crash, according to the traffic log.

Emergency responders found beer cans in the vehicle, according to the traffic log.

The CHP and the Morro Bay Police Department responded to the incident.
