Two views of the Madonna Road corridor, from 2013 and 2023, show how the San Luis Ranch development has transformed the area in San Luis Obispo.

Editor’s note: This is one in our new “Then and Now” series comparing historical San Luis Obispo County photos to the same locations today.

The construction of San Luis Ranch is changing the view from a hilltop next to Laguna Lake Park.

These contrasting views a decade apart from 2013 and 2023 show how housing is filling in what was formerly farmland known as the Dalidio Ranch off Madonna Road.

It took decades for the site to move through the annexation and development approval process, as the property was the subject of ballot measures, lawsuits and election campaigns before owner Ernie Dalidio eventually sold the property in 2013.

In addition, many businesses visible in the 2013 view have changed. Panera Bread, Forever 21, Applebees, Hometown Buffet, Tahoe Joe’s and Taco Bell are just a few of the businesses that are no longer at this location.

The recent construction boom in San Luis Obispo is one of the reasons that the population in the city of San Luis Obispo increased over the last year while other areas saw a net loss.
