Highway 41 in Atascadero opened Tuesday afternoon after being closed for two weeks due to storm damage, according to Caltrans.

Caltrans closed a three-mile stretch of the highway that connects Atascadero to Morro Bay on March 14 due to a landslide caused by recent atmospheric river-fueled rainstorms, the state road agency said Tuesday in a news release.

The closure forced travelers to detour by taking Highway 46 between south of Cambria and Paso Robles or Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo.

“Crews have removed thousands of yards of dirt from the slide and slope, working during daylight hours, seven days a week,” Caltrans said in the release.

A K-rail was being installed Tuesday before the roadway reopened to travelers, the release said.

The stretch of Highway 41 between San Gabriel Road and Los Altos Road in Atascadero reopened at 4 p.m. Tuesday, the release said.

Souza Construction in San Luis Obispo served as the contractor for the $2.8 million emergency project, which includes work in other areas of San Luis Obispo County, the release said.
