Mountain lion seen prowling in SLO neighborhood is trapped and relocated

A mountain lion seen prowling around the Laguna Lake area has been caught and relocated, the city of San Luis Obispo announced Friday afternoon.

The lion — which had been “causing concern for many” in the area — was safely trapped by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the city announced in a tweet.

“They relocated the lion to a remote area and put a GPS tracker on it,” the city said. “It is not expected to return to #SLOCity.”

Reports of mountain lion sightings in San Luis Obispo County have gone up in the past few years, with a number of pictures and videos of the animals in local neighborhoods popping up online in recent months.

In November 2022, a mountain lion was caught twice on camera in the backyard of a home off Oceanaire Drive in San Luis Obispo. In the second video, the lion could be seen chasing the homeowner’s dog.

Then in February, a San Luis Obispo woman was attacked and her dog carried off during a walk in the Laguna Lake area. Officials at the time said they were working to trap and relocate that animal.
