‘Serious slipout’ closes Highway 1 at another spot on the Big Sur coast
A section of Highway 1 will close just north of the tiny Central Coast town of Gorda on Friday afternoon so crews can repair storm damage, according to Caltrans.
The closure will go into effect at 4:30 p.m. Friday about 10.6 miles north of the border between San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties, the agency said in a news release.
Caltrans is closing the road “due to a serious slip out of the roadway,” the release said.
Area residents “will have this one opportunity (Friday) to travel to the south if they desire,” Caltrans said.
Crews are also working to repair Highway 1 south of Torre Canyon Bridge, about 39.5 miles north of the county line, the release said.
“A slide continues to cover the roadway” at that spot, Caltrans said.
According to the agency, crews were working with a long reach excavator on Friday and to perform rock scaling on Saturday, with the aim of opening Highway 1 there on Sunday or Monday.
A section of Highway 1 is also closed from Ragged Point north of San Simeon to just south of Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn, according to Caltrans. Ragged Point Inn, Deetjen’s and businesses north of the northern closure and south of Ragged Point, remain open. Hearst Castle is also open, but officials may close it intermittently for public-safety reasons during high winds and strong storms.
A portion of the hillside collapsed during a recent rain storm, and debris stretches across 0.4 miles of Highway 1, according to Caltrans.
That part of Highway 1 is “set for a long-term closure,” the agency said.
