Driving on Highway 1? Lane closures, traffic delays start in SLO County this week
Drivers can expect delays while traveling at night this week on Highway 1 in southern San Luis Obispo County.
Caltrans will start a $13 million street improvement project on Thursday that will result in overnight lane and shoulder closures on Highway 1, Caltrans District 5 announced via Twitter.
Motorists can expect traffic delays of about 20 minutes from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the highway from Pismo Beach to Oceano, according to Caltrans.
Crews will resurface a seven-mile stretch of Highway 1, extending from the Highway 101 interchange at Mattie Road in Pismo Beach, to south of Valley Road near Garcia Way in Oceano, Caltrans said.
The contractor, CalPortland Construction of Santa Maria, will also build “new retaining walls, bridge rehabilitation and safety improvements, new American with Disabilities Act compliant curb ramps and new traffic and lighting systems,” the agency said in a news release.
“This project will enhance safety and provide a better experience for all travelers, including pedestrians and bicyclists along this stretch of road,” Caltrans District 5 director Scott Eades said in the release.
The road resurfacing project is expected to be completed by November 2023, according to Caltrans.
State Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, funded $1.6 million of the project.
An additional $11.4 million comes from the federal government, Caltrans said.
