SLO County sheriff continues search for missing boy swept away in floodwaters

The search for a local 5-year-old boy swept away in floodwaters in a January storm resumed Sunday, with 35 members of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office’s search and rescue and dive teams looking near San Miguel.

The teams searched north of the River Road Bridge, north of where searchers had previously looked, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Tony Cipolla told The Tribune on Friday.

San Miguel resident Kyle Doan has been missing since Jan. 9, when his mother’s car was overtaken by water in San Marcos Creek as the two were on their way to school. Bystanders were able to save his mom, but Kyle disappeared into the current.

Multiple law enforcement agencies have searched for Doan since then, encountering some early delays due to rainy weather.

The search has garnered national attention, with President Joe Biden offering prayers for the Doan family after visiting the Central Coast on Jan. 19.

According to Cipolla, searchers have recovered “multiple items of personal property from the car,” fa Nike shoe, a lunchbox, laptop, DVDs and a school ID.

A small Nike shoe was recovered shortly after Kyle disappeared.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office resumed the search for Kyle Doan on Jan. 28, 2023, including using a boat in the waters north of the River Road Bridge.
