Cal Fire officers rescued a horse after it got stuck in a muddy creek on Wednesday.

A rancher attempted to cross a creek with his horse near his Arroyo Grande home on Carpenter Canyon Road at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Cal Fire spokesperson Toni Davis.

That’s when the horse sunk about a foot deep into the mud, Davis said.

The horse was walking in “a real muddy, saturated part of the creek” wedged between a cactus and a willow tree, Davis said.

According to Davis, a veterinarian joined the rescue mission and sedated the horse, allowing Cal Fire officers to remove the willow tree using an electric chainsaw.

Now working with more space, officers and the rancher shoveled the horse’s back feet out of the mud so the animal could escape, Davis said.

After about 30 minutes, the horse was free.

“It went actually pretty quick,” Davis said. “He was just horsin’ around.”

The Urban Search and Rescue Team assisted with the rescue, according to Davis.
