A person died by suicide Tuesday morning in downtown San Luis Obispo, the San Luis Obispo Police Department said in a news release.
San Luis Obispo police officers, the Community Action Team and the city’s Mobile Crisis Unit responded to the 900 block of Palm Street, where the person was experiencing a mental health crisis, around 9:15 a.m., police said.
Police attempted to locate the person after receiving a 911 call that someone was in distress, the release said.
“Shortly after contact was made, the community member took their own life,” police said in the release.
Palm Street was closed for approximately one hour while police investigated the incident, the release said.
Social media reports say the person fell from a parking structure.
A city-owned parking garage is located at 919 Palm St. at the intersection of Palm and Morro streets.
“No other details will be released at this time to protect the privacy of the individual and their family,” police said.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Unit will take over the investigation.
