A vehicle collided with a pillar connected to the San Luis Obispo County Elections Office on election night Nov. 8, 2022.

While elections workers were counting ballots inside of the Clerk-Recorder’s Office on Tuesday night, two Hondas collided on the street outside — resulting in at least one crashing into a pillar connected to the building, SLO Police Department Lt. Jason Dickel said.

At about 11 p.m., a Honda Civic and a Honda CRV collided at the corner of Santa Rosa and Monterey streets, then “somehow made contact with the building,” Dickel said.

“That startled everybody,” SLO County Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano said. “It was a pretty bad accident.”

No one inside the building was injured in the collision. The crash caused serious damage to the cars and minor damage to the building, but Dickel didn’t know the extent, he said.

Dickel also did not know if the drivers were injured in the crash. He said a report on the incident will be completed in a week or two.

The San Luis Obispo Fire Department also responded to the site of the collision, Dickel said.
