Massive power outage leaves huge swath of SLO County in the dark

Power outage

A massive power outage left almost the entire North Coast in the dark Friday night, according to PG&E’s outage map.

The outage, which began shortly before 11 p.m. and lasted until about 2:20 a.m., stretched from north Morro Bay all the way up Highway 1 past Ragged Point and into Monterey County.

A total of 4,831 customers were without power, according to PG&E.

According to the map, it appeared that all of Cayucos, Cambria and San Simeon lost power.

The PG&E outage map shows two outages Friday night, one affecting nearly the entire North Coast from Morro Bay to above the county line and another smaller one between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo.

PG&E dispatched crews to assess the problem and initially estimated electricity would be restored by 6 a.m.

The large outage wasn’t the only one creating problems for SLO County residents Friday night. A separate nearby outage along Highway 1 knocked out power to 290 customers between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo around the same time.

PG&E estimated that power would be restored in that outage by 3:15 a.m.

It’s unclear if the two outages were related.
