Bob Masterson had served as the police chief in King City since 2016 before he was hired to replace Atascadero police Chief Jerel Haley, who retired in October 2020.

Atascadero Police Department Chief Robert “Bob” Masterson is currently on leave for an undisclosed reason, city officials confirmed to The Tribune on Wednesday.

Terrie Banish, public information officer for the City of Atascadero, told The Tribune via text message that Masterson is “out on leave and he appointed Commander (Jason) Carr to be acting police chief in his absence.”

Banish would not confirm the type of leave or whether it was administrative paid leave. It is unknown when the leave began or how long it might last.

“The City doesn’t comment on any employee matters,” she said.

Masterson was appointed to the position in 2020 after previously serving as police chief in King City.
