Highway 1 from Morro Bay to Monterey has been tapped by worldatlas.com as one of California’s four best road trips.

As reporter Eleni Veroutsos posted on the website Aug. 3, “There’s something special about road tripping in this beautiful state. And when it comes to coastal road trips, it can’t be beat!”

The drive from Morro Bay to Monterey shows up first on the website, although there’s no formal ranking among the four selected routes.

“With its stunning ocean views, beautiful beaches, and quaint small towns, a drive down California’s Highway 1 is an unforgettable experience,” Veroutsos wrote.

“This stunning drive takes 3 hours and the best time to take this trip is from late spring to early fall when the weather is warm and sunny,” she said. “However, if you’re looking for smaller crowds, aim for mid-week travel in the shoulder season (April-May or September-October).

Among the “amazing things to see along the way” are Morro Bay, Hearst Castle, the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas and the Big Sur coastline.

Veroutsos lauds various businesses and experiences along the route as well, including the Madonna Inn and tri-tip sandwiches in San Luis Obispo, fresh oysters in Morro Bay and Monterey’s clam chowder.

She also highlights meals “from fresh seafood to farm-to-table fare,” concluding that “no matter when you go or what you do, a road trip down California’s Highway 1 is sure to be memorable.”

The three other road trips honored were in Napa Valley, Gold Country and Joshua Tree National Park and the Mojave Desert.

Noting that “this amazing state offers something for everyone, from stunning coastlines and mountain vistas to bustling city streets and wide-open desert landscapes,” Veroutsos urged readers to “pack up your car and get ready for an unforgettable journey” in California.
