A bicyclist was killed late Wednesday night after his bike crashed into a fire truck, the California Highway Patrol said.

The fatal collision happened at about 10:20 p.m. at the intersection of Trouville Avenue and 13th Street, according to a CHP news release sent Thursday morning.

A 29-year-old Arroyo Grande man was traveling westbound on an electric bike on Trouville Avenue, the release said.

At the same time, the CHP said, a 2017 Pierce fire truck driven by a 39-year-old employee of Five Cities Fire Authority was traveling northbound on 13th Street. The truck was returning to the fire station from a prior service call, according to the Five Cities Fire Authority.

The cyclist “entered the intersection directly into” the fire truck’s path, CHP wrote in its news release, and his bike hit the right front side of the fire truck.

Trouville Avenue has a stop sign at the 13th Street intersection, while traffic traveling on 13th Street does not have a stop sign.

The bicyclist was then ejected from the bike, the release said.

According to the CHP, the driver and passengers in the fire truck immediately got out of the vehicle and started to try to save the man’s life.

The bicyclist was soon transported to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, where he ultimately died, the CHP said.

His name had not yet been released as of Thursday morning pending notification of his family.

Police said the crash is currently under further investigation.
