SLO County town makes list of best ‘off the radar’ vacation destinations
A list of six top “off the radar” vacation destinations includes the Central Coast’s own seaside village of Cambria.
Wendy Gold, author of the June 30 report for www.bestlifeonline.com, identified the six chosen communities as “hidden gems worthy of your travel bucket list that are truly still hidden.”
Gold wrote of Cambria, “This picturesque town is home to unspoiled coasts and preserves, picture-perfect inns and charming eateries. Hunt for moonstones at the beach … try the famous olallieberry pie at Linn’s and partake in forest bathing — or simply stroll or pedal — at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.”
She also suggested trying fresh cheeses from Stepladder Creamery.
The lead photo in Gold’s report was of Cambria’s 1-mile-long Moonstone Beach Boardwalk, which wends its way along shoreline bluffs and provides stunning ocean views.
Woody Sears, co-founder of the Autio travel app, described in Gold’s report a bumper sticker from another town on the June 30 list, that reads “we’re all here because we’re not all there.”
Among the things Sears mentioned and Gold quotes about “this little seaside town …. (were lots of) open space, walking and biking trails, and wild beaches. … It also has a desirable downtown with plenty of dining options.”
In order, the six communities highlighted as being “off-the-radar” destinations that are “less saturated with tourists (and tourist traps!) but still rich in culture” were:
- Port Townsend, Washington (which is where Sears found the bumper sticker)
- Tubac, Arizona
- New River Gorge, West Virginia
- Cambria
- Shipshewana, Indiana
- Bend, Oregon
Gold said that sometimes, visits to places like those are “precisely what the soul needs.”
