These are the highest-paid state job openings in SLO County for July — and how to apply
State jobs often offer attractive benefits and pensions — and in San Luis Obispo County, they can even come with major paychecks.
As of Friday, there are 117 openings with California agencies based out of SLO County, according to job listing website CalCareers.ca.gov.
Of those, 23 could net you a monthly paycheck of more than $10,000.
Many of the highest-paid positions listed are long-term medical or mental health posts at the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero State Hospital, although other state agencies also are looking for workers.
Here is a roundup of the highest-paid open listings as of July 6:
Physician and surgeon, permanent full-time
Department: California Correctional Health Care Services, California Men’s Colony
Salary: $24,708 to $25,944 per month
A physician with the California Men’s Colony would be expected to see approximately 10 to 12 patients per day, deliver basic primary care to a diverse patient population and provide education to patients related to chronic disease management.
The department is also looking for a limited term physician with the same job description and pay scale, and permanent part-time physicians at a lower pay scale.
The position is open until filled.
Senior psychiatrist (supervisor), permanent full-time
Department: California Correctional Health Care Services, California Men’s Colony
Salary: $24,473 to $29,781 per month
Under the supervision of the chief psychiatrist, the senior psychiatrist supervisor provides general supervision of staff psychiatrists and other mental health staff, according to the listing. They direct specialized psychiatric assessment and treatment programs; participate in the hiring of new psychiatrists; provide consultation regarding clinical issues to custodial staff and perform special assignments as requested by the chief psychiatrist.

Salary: $22,763 to $28,072 per month
California Correction Health Care Services is seeking psychiatrists with an interest in correctional and forensic psychiatry to work in the Mental Health Program at the California Men’s Colony. The program’s mission is to provide ethical, professional and effective mental health care services for patients. It is committed to providing optimal care, promoting patients’ successful reintegration into society, and reducing recidivism.

Staff psychiatrist, permanent full-time
Department: California Department of State Hospitals, Atascadero
Salary: $21,681 to $26,736 per month
The staff psychiatrist performs psychiatric evaluations and provides clinical leadership. They write orders for admission, transfer, discharge, medications, restraints and seclusion and suicide precautions as necessary, and evaluate and document assault incidents and suicidal threats, attempts and self-harm behaviors. They meet monthly with each assigned patient and provide daily sick call for patients. They may be called upon to prepare court reports.
The hospital also has limited term full-time, limited term intermittent, retired annuitant and permanent part-time positions open with the same job description.

Under the supervision of the mental health program manager, the senior psychologist supervisor provides general supervision of psychologists, according to the listing.
Depending on work location, they may have direct supervision of the following classifications: office assistant, office technician, office services supervisor II, health program specialist I, psychiatric technician and recreation therapist.
The senior psychologist supervisor directs specialized psychological assessment and treatment programs; participates in the hiring of new employees; reviews and makes recommendations regarding research projects; reviews second-level inmate appeals; provides consultation regarding clinical issues to custodial staff, and performs special assignments requested by the Chief Psychiatrist.

Under the direction of the Chief Nurse Executive, the supervising registered nurse III oversees the daily operations of a correctional facility nursing services program. They are responsible for planning, assigning, supervising and evaluating the work of subordinate supervisors, nurses and other assigned staff, as well as receiving, disseminating and implementing policies and procedures, apply supervisory rules and principles, assist in the resolution of labor relations issues, set goals for self and others and ensure the continuity of quality patient care. The supervising registered nurse III also ensures the implementation of an effective training and competency validation program for nursing services.
There is also a limited-term, full-time open position with the same job description and pay scale.

Supervising registered nurse II, permanent full-time
Department: California Correctional Health Care Services, California Men’s Colony
Salary: $10,361 to $12,970 per month
Under the direction of the chief nurse executive or the supervising registered nurse III, the supervising registered nurse II is responsible for planning, assigning, supervising and evaluating the work of nursing and other assigned staff in a service line delivery area, according to the listing. The position receives, disseminates, implements and monitors the adherence to policies and procedures, applies supervisory rules and principles, resolves personnel issues, sets goals for self and others and ensures the continuity of quality patient care.
