Paso Robles man killed in high-speed crash on Highway 101

A Paso Robles man was killed in a high-speed crash on Highway 101 on Tuesday evening.

According to CHP, the driver of a 2009 Dodge Charger was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound near the South Spring Street exit around 7:04 p.m. He was passing cars on both the inside and outside shoulders, and while doing so, clipped a 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser, according to a CHP news release.

The impact caused the Dodge to spin into the median, where it struck a dirt embankment and went airborne. It came to rest on its roof on the outside shoulder near the Spring Street off-ramp.

The driver, identified as a 54-year-old male resident of Paso Robles, died at the scene. His name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

The driver is believed to have potentially been under the influence of alcohol, CHP said.

The Toyota sustained only minor damage and its occupants were largely unharmed, according to CHP.

The crash is currently under investigation.
