More affordable homes will soon be available for San Luis Obispo residents as construction on the new Tiburon Place development is now underway.

On June 15, members of the nonprofit People’s Self-Help Housing broke ground on the project at 3750 Bullock Lane, marking the start of construction.

Once complete, Tiburon Place will feature two three-story buildings with 68 apartments, including studio, one- and two-bedroom units. The complex will also feature an outdoor courtyard, a playground and onsite supportive facilities.

Tiburon Place is the latest affordable housing development undertaken by People’s Self-Help Housing. Like its other affordable housing complexes, Tiburon Place will have rents affordable to households earning 30-60% of the median area income. These apartments will specifically serve low-income families and veterans in the area.

According to Ken Trigueiro, People’s Self-Help CEO and president, the project will allow the organization to continue “chipping away at the affordable housing crisis on the Central Coast.”

The nonprofit has built nearly 1,000 units of new affordable housing so far since it was founded in 1970. It currently has 26 affordable housing complexes throughout San Luis Obispo County, from Oceano to Cambria, which provide more than 5,000 individuals with an affordable home.

Data compiled by SLO Health Counts, which is run by San Luis Obispo County’s Public Health Department, showed that in 2020, more than half of SLO County residents reported being “cost burdened,” meaning that what they spent on housing accounted for more than 30% of their after-tax income.

Communities where people spend more than 30% of their income on housing, according to SLO Health Counts, often tend to see a more rapid rise in homelessness. It is also more difficult for people to meet other basic needs such as nutrition and healthcare, according to the website.

With more than six affordable housing projects in the works including Tiburon Place, People’s Self-Help Housing hopes to continue reducing the number of cost-burdened people in the county.
