A 31-year-old man died Thursday morning after he drove his car off the side of Highway 101 near the base of the Cuesta Grade near San Luis Obispo, the California Highway Patrol said.

Reports of the fatal crash first came in at around 6 a.m. Thursday, according to online emergency traffic monitor PulsePoint.

However, a CHP news release said that the time of the crash was “undetermined,” describing it only as “early morning.”

The unidentified man was driving southbound on Highway 101 in the farthest right-hand lane south of TV Tower Road at an unknown speed when the crash occurred, according to the release.

“For an unknown reason, (the driver) made an unsafe turning movement to the right and collided with the guardrail along the right shoulder,” the CHP said in its release. “The vehicle continued down the hillside and began to overturn.”

Eventually, the vehicle “came to rest on its roof,” the agency said.

When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, the man had already died due to his injuries, the CHP said.

The agency did not identify the man by name pending notification of family.

Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol office in San Luis Obispo at 805-594-8700.
