Man killed in rollover crash near Big Sur — and his car is still 700 feet down a cliff
A man died in a rollover crash north of Ragged Point near Big Sur, according to the California Highway Patrol.
His vehicle remained about 700 feet down a cliff as of Tuesday morning.
The fatal crash occurred on Highway 1 between Salmon Creek and Soda Springs, about 7 miles south of Gorda, the CHP said. Various agencies responded to the site following a call from a passerby late Saturday afternoon.
The Monterey County Coroner’s Office will release more details about the as-yet-unidentified man, who was born in 1930, according to CHP spokesman Officer Ruben Gonzales.
Gonzales said he expects more information about the crash and the vehicle involved in it to be available by Friday.
Coroner’s Office Cmdr. Garrett Sanders was not available for comment midday Tuesday.
Gonzales said the wrecked vehicle, which came to rest between Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean, should be recovered sometime this week.
Man rolls vehicle in San Simeon crash
In an unrelated incident late Saturday or early Sunday, a man reportedly fell asleep while driving on Highway 1 north of San Simeon and rolled his 2017 Toyota Tacoma north of Pico Creek.
A CHP spokesman said the driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel and drifted off the road toward the ocean, traveling through a fence and flipping the Toyota.
The man wasn’t injured and there was no property damage, according to the CHP, so no formal report was written.
The vehicle was readily visible from Highway 1.
