Gas is now more than $6 a gallon on average in SLO County — breaking records again

It’s been heading that way for a few weeks now, but the official average price of a gallon of gas in San Luis Obispo County has finally passed the $6 mark.

As of Wednesday, the average price of a gallon of regular was $6.05, according to AAA, which monitors fuel prices. That’s the highest price for the county ever recorded by AAA.

AAA ranked SLO County as the third-most-expensive in California for gas, behind Mono County, where a gallon of regular gas costs an average of $6.60, and Inyo County, where the average is $6.06 per gallon.

According to AAA, national gas prices have dropped slightly in the past week thanks to a lower global crude oil cost and less demand for gas — perhaps as a result of the previously record-high prices many people were seeing at the pump.

Though prices nationally have gone down somewhat, in California, the prices continue to rise. As of Wednesday, the average price of a gallon statewide was $5.875, up almost $2 from the year before, according to AAA.

California relief package for residents impacted by high gas prices

Relief could be on the way, however.

On Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom released details of his new gas relief plan, which would deliver $11 billion to Californians in response to record-high gas prices.

“We’re taking immediate action to get money directly into the pockets of Californians who are facing higher gas prices as a direct result of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” Newsom said in a news release. “But this package is also focused on protecting people from volatile gas prices, and advancing clean transportation.”

The package would provide residents with a $400-per-vehicle direct payment in the form of a debit card, almost $750 million in incentive grants to transit and rail agencies to provide free transit for three months, $500 million to fast-track existing biking and walking projects and a pause on the sales tax rate for diesel and excise tax rates on regular gas.
