For the first time, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast is opening a club and program in San Luis Obispo.

It will be the nonprofit organization’s 15th club and is set to launch on April 18.

The Boys & Girls Clubs will offer lunchtime and after-school programming with a capacity to serve 80 students at Laguna Middle School, where the organization will have dedicated space.

“As most working parents know, after-school child care is not as easy to access for many families as they would like,” the organization said in a news release. “The middle school student is frequently the most overlooked age group when it comes to after-school services and experiences.”

The nonprofit has existed on the Central Coast since 1966, providing “high-quality, affordable after-school programming,” the news release said.

Club programming

The program will be held in the main classroom A-14 and be offered for free from April 18 through the end of the semester in June, according to program coordinators.

After school hours will be 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Parents will need to create an account at bgcmidcentralcoast.force.com and register for “Afterschool 2021-2022” at Laguna.

Learning options will include financial literacy and health and fitness education, in addition to other activities.

“The school district was eager to put programming in place to confront bullying and cultural awareness issues found at the middle school level and learned the (Boys and Girls Clubs) model to be the ideal way to bring a comprehensive program to the campus,” the organization noted.

Laguna Middle School Club Director Griffin Cook has begun developing his staff of youth development professionals to coordinate and lead the programs and services.

“Club staff will also lead lunchtime programming for all students at Laguna Middle School who are interested,” the release said. “They do not need to be club members to benefit from lunchtime programming.”

Michael Boyer, CEO of the local nonprofit, said in a statement: “It just makes sense that we bring our expertise and excellence in caring for kids to the youth of San Luis Obispo.”
