Vehicle crashes on the rocks off of Avila Beach Drive

A vehicle went over the embankment off of Avila Beach Drive and crashed upside down on the beach late Sunday evening.

At 9:15 p.m. the crash was first reported as a vehicle in the ocean, but the dark blue Isuzu Trooper was discovered on its roof in the rocks with an occupant still inside.

The California Highway Patrol, Port San Luis Harbor Patrol, sheriff’s deputies and medics responded to the scene.

San Luis Obispo CHP Sgt. Charlie Wilson said the driver, a 21-year-old female from Nipomo, was driving the 1995 Isuzu Trooper eastbound on Avila Beach Drive at Babe Lane from Port San Luis at approximately 45 to 50 mph.



The driver was looking at her cell phone and allowed the Isuzu to drift off the edge of Avila Beach Drive and went down the embankment landing on the rocks.

The female driver suffered only minor injuries.

Driving under the influence is suspected, Sgt. Wilson said.
