More low-income apartments are opening in San Luis Obispo. Here’s how to apply
Applications open this week for housing in a new low-income apartment complex, the city of San Luis Obispo announced in a news release.
The application will be open online only from Tuesday at 9 a.m. through Thursday at 4 p.m. on the Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo (HASLO) website.
Preference will be given to San Luis Obispo County residents and veterans who earn less than 30% of the area median income. This amounts to “extremely low-income” in the county; for example, a $25,100 income limit for a household of four.
The application is for a limited number of apartment units at 3175 Violet St. supported by the federal government’s Project-Based Voucher program. People must meet the program’s eligibility requirements to apply.
“The program attaches rental assistance to a particular unit rather than to a family,” the city said in the news release. “The resident of the unit benefits from a monthly subsidy that is paid directly to the landlord. The resident will only pay a portion of their actual income toward rent and the subsidy pays the balance.”
Eligible applicants will then be placed on a wait list in order of date and time of their submission. Applicants will then be referred to the landlord, Courtyard at the Meadows, for additional screening requirements.
The program offers one-, two- and three-bedroom units and requires two household members in each bedroom unless there are gender or generational differences, according to the news release.
People in need of an accommodation to apply for the wait list can call 805-543-4478. Computer access is available at public libraries or by calling America’s Job Center at 805-286-8530 to schedule a time to use a computer provided at 3450 Broad St., No. 103.
