‘There’s a horse ... on the run!’ Police, residents corral loose equine in Grover Beach

When Grover Beach resident Amandalee McClellan left her home for a walk Monday afternoon, she was joined by an unexpected guest: a runaway horse.

The horse, a 14-year-old named Hidalgo, had escaped from the beach parking lot, Grover Beach police said in a social media post, before proceeding east on Grand Avenue for several blocks before ending up near Grover Beach Elementary School at 10th Street and Seabright.

“There’s a horse ... on the run!” McClellan said in a video she posted to the SLO County News Facebook group, over footage of the astray equine trotting down the street with its lead rope trailing on the ground as police vehicles drove up to head him off.

“This is Grover Beach, everyone,” McClellan said, after noting she didn’t like horses. “Should I be worried?”

Eventually, community members and officers were able to corral Hidalgo, and his trainer showed up shortly after.

“It took some time to get him loaded up, but we’re just guessing he wasn’t ready to leave the beach,” Grover Beach police quipped in their post. “Can you blame him?”
