Part of Hwy. 101 could be named for Katcho Achadjian. ‘He was an American success story’
A portion of Highway 101 between Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach could soon be known as the Katcho Achadjian Memorial Highway, after the late Central Coast assemblyman.
Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham, R-San Luis Obispo, introduced a resolution to the state Legislature Wednesday to dedicate the segment of the highway to Achadjian, who died in 2020.
Achadjian was a beloved Central Coast representative who served on the San Luis Obispo County Board for 12 years before moving on to the state Assembly, where he served another six years.
“Katcho was my friend and mentor,” Cunningham said in the release. “He was an American success story and a true public servant who always put the Central Coast first. His legacy of energetic representation, consensus-building and public service is a model for all that seek elected office. While he will always be missed by the Central Coast community, the renaming of this segment of Highway 101 ensures that he will never be forgotten.”
Achadjian died in March 2020 at the age of 68.
His memorial service at Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa drew a crowd of current and former government officials — both state and local — as well as dozens of assembled friends and colleagues.
“Katcho was the heart and soul of his family,” wife Araxie Achadjian said in the news release Wednesday. “His love for his community was unconditional; his contributions to society were innumerable; his pride for this nation was unmatchable. ... Thank you to Assemblyman Cunningham and this legislative body for honoring Katcho’s memory in such a meaningful way. We are sincerely grateful for their efforts.”
