Morro Bay named one of the top winter fishing destinations in the United States
A website that offers a platform for booking recreational fishing trips nationwide has listed its 10 Best Winter Fishing Destinations of 2022 in the United States — and Morro Bay placed second.
FishingBooker said the “stars of the fishing scene in Morro Bay are lingcod and a variety of rockfish, so from the get-go, you know that bottom fishing is on fire.”
Other top destinations included Kenai, Alaska (No. 1), South Padre Island, Texas (No. 3), Lincoln City, Ore. (No. 4), Orange Beach & Gulf Shores, Ala. (No. 5), Bristol, Tenn. (No. 6), Elephant Butte Lake, N.M. (No. 7); Miami, Fla. (No. 8); Presque Isle Bay, Pa. (No. 9); and Bozeman, Mont. (No. 10).
The site lauded Morro Bay for its shore fishing, saying “fishermen can head to one of the beaches or local parks for surf fishing” as well as its private charters ready to head out for a deep sea casting adventure.
“Thanks to the rocky shore and deep waters close to land, the bite is something that needs to be experienced to be believed,” FishingBooker wrote. “When you’ve had your fill of fishing, you can spend your days surfing, kayaking and whale watching. After a fulfilling day on the water, you can walk around the Old Town and enjoy the city’s nautical charm.”
The site chooses locations “based on the quality of the fishery and popularity with the angling community,” a representative told The Tribune.
“We also include places with excellent fishing that are off the beaten path and often overlooked,” said Karin Mayer, an outreach and public relations specialist. “Morro Bay placed so well due to the variety of fishing possibilities that are offered.”
