Car fire snarls Highway 101 traffic from SLO to Pismo Beach

Caltrans

A car fire was slowing traffic on Highway 101 through Shell Beach on Wednesday afternoon.

Caltrans District 5 spokesman Jim Shivers said that traffic in the southbound lanes of the freeway was slow due to the blaze near the Avila Beach Drive overpass.

According to CHP traffic logs, the car fire was reported around 3:06 p.m.

The third southbound lane of Highway 101 was still open with traffic control in place, Shivers said.

Caltrans traffic cameras show cars backed up on the southbound lanes of the highway from Pismo Beach all the way to Los Osos Valley Road on-ramp in San Luis Obispo.

Caltrans urged Thanksgiving holiday travelers passing through the area to drive carefully.
